Congratulations to our students and alumni!

Slavic Languages congratulates its wonderful students on the very prestigious awards they have won this year.

Jonathan Askonas is the recipient of a Beineke Scholarship, which will give him substantial funding towards his graduate studies.

Alexandra Dudziuk and Stephen Szypulski won Fulbright fellowships. Alexandra and Stephen will both be going to Poland. Stephen will research the role of organized religion as an actor of social change, with Poland as a case study. Alexandra has been awarded the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant position.

Kasia Clarke received a 2013 Fulbright Fellowship to Russia. She will teach students at a Russian university, and she plans to work with her students on creating an online literary journal. Kasia will continue to learn Russian through a Critical Language Enhancement grant.

Holly Robertson received a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship to Poland. Holly will use her FLAS to complete a 10-week intensive Polish course at the University of Pittsburgh this summer. She will spend the month of August 2013 in northeastern Poland researching the relations between ethnic Polish Jews and Polish Tatar Muslims during the Holocaust.

Melanie Slaby received the best picture award in the category of drama at the 2013 Georgetown University Film Festival for her directorial debut, A Shame (in Polish and English with English subtitles, 7 min.). The film is available here: http://vimeo.com/65114253
